At age fourteen, his parents sent him to a private school in Newark, New Jersey where he was tutored privately by a Mr. Samuel Bartlett for one year. When his family moved to Trenton in 1853, he continued to attend private tutoring until he entered Princeton University in 1856.

Havens became one of the best rowing crews in the country and won all three competitions in which he participated; however, he did not participate in any of the collegiate regattas because rigged rules required that all boats be fully crewed by four persons. In 1870, Havens graduated from Princeton and returned to Trenton where he was hired as a teacher for the public schools. At Princeton University (Class of 1866), he had been an outstanding athlete, but after graduating from Trenton's public school system (Class of 1870), he found himself unable to read or write and unable to teach effectively.
